Mexican tarragon (also known as Mexican mint marigold) is a versatile herb with a sweet, anise-like flavour that makes a fantastic tarragon substitute in the kitchen. To ensure your Mexican tarragon thrives, here are the optimal conditions to consider:
Soil:
Mexican tarragon prefers well-drained soil and does best in a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (roughly 6.0–7.5). It’s adaptable, but it won’t tolerate waterlogged soils, especially in cooler weather.
Light:
Mexican tarragon flourishes in full sun (at least 6+ hours per day). It can handle partial shade, but you’ll get the best growth and flavour in strong light.
Temperature:
This plant loves warm conditions and handles heat well. It can be grown as a perennial in mild areas, but it’s frost sensitive—during cold snaps it may die back or struggle, so it’s often treated as a warm-season herb or kept in a pot you can move.
Water:
Water regularly while it establishes, then switch to deep, less frequent watering. Let the top few centimetres of soil dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering is the quickest way to upset it.
Nutrients:
Mexican tarragon is fairly low-maintenance. A light feed in spring and mid-season is plenty. A thin layer of compost or a gentle balanced fertiliser keeps it productive without pushing weak, sappy growth.
In summary, Mexican tarragon is a tough, fragrant herb that loves warmth and sun, making it an excellent choice for gardeners wanting reliable flavour with minimal fuss.
Plant Details:
🌱 SEEDLING HEIGHT | Typically 10cm–20cm, including the root system.
📏 SPACING | Rows: 30cm–40cm apart • Plants: 25cm–30cm apart.
🥗 HARVEST | Start picking once the plant is established and leafy (often 6–10 weeks after planting, depending on warmth). Harvest little and often for best regrowth.
🌡️ CONDITIONS | Full sun, free-draining soil, avoid soggy ground. In cooler months, a pot can be ideal so you can shelter it from heavy rain and cold snaps.
