Our seedlings are better than bunnings... Why?

Seedlings from quality plants and seedlings are generally considered better than vegetable seedlings from large retailers such as Bunnings for several reasons:

  1. Genetic quality: Seedlings from quality plants and seedlings have been carefully bred and selected for desirable traits, such as disease resistance, yield, and flavor. This means that they are more likely to produce healthy, productive plants with good flavor and nutritional value. Vegetable seedlings from large retailers may not have the same genetic quality, as they may be sourced from a variety of growers and may not have undergone the same selection and breeding process.

  2. Growing conditions: Seedlings from quality plants and seedlings are often grown in optimal conditions, such as in a greenhouse with controlled temperature, humidity, and lighting. This allows the seedlings to develop strong root systems, healthy foliage, and sturdy stems before they are transplanted into the garden. Vegetable seedlings from large retailers may not have the same growing conditions, as they may be grown outdoors or in less controlled environments.

  3. Transplant shock: Seedlings from quality plants and seedlings are often carefully hardened off before they are transplanted into the garden. This means that they are gradually exposed to outdoor conditions, such as wind and temperature changes, which helps them to adjust and reduces transplant shock. Vegetable seedlings from large retailers may not have undergone the same hardening off process, which can increase the risk of transplant shock and reduce their overall health and productivity.

Overall, while vegetable seedlings from large retailers such as Bunnings can be a convenient and affordable option, seedlings from quality plants and seedlings are generally considered to be of higher quality and more likely to produce healthy, productive plants. It's important to do research and choose a reputable source for seedlings that have been carefully selected, grown, and hardened off to ensure the best results in the garden.

  • Hi, Im researching a new supplier of vegetable seedlings for winter in se qld. We usually buy from Bunnings which is just up the road, however I dont know whether it is my imagination but their quality seems to be getting worse. I am currantly growing silver beet, zuccini and lettuce, with the intention of putting in potatoe. Could you please send us a cattle dog.

    Thank You
