🌿 Hey Plant Lover! Welcome to the Wonderful World of QPS Plantlings 🌿
Hey there!
If you're reading this, you’re probably one of two amazing people:
1️⃣ You’ve just received a QPS plantling in the mail (woohoo!)
2️⃣ Or, you’re curious about what makes our plantlings so special 👀
Either way—welcome to the Quality Plants & Seedlings crew! We're here to guide you through what to do next with your brand new green buddy. 🌱
🪴 What Exactly Is a QPS Plantling?
A plantling is a young, nursery-grown plant that's either propagated via tissue culture or grown from seed in a tray cell. At QPS, we only send out plantlings once they’ve developed a robust, well-formed root system, so they’re strong and ready to settle in.
Your plantling will likely arrive nestled in soft, damp sphagnum moss. Why?
👉 Because sphagnum moss helps retain moisture during transit, prevents root damage, and keeps things sterile and gentle for young roots.
🧼 What to Do When Your Plantling Arrives
When you unpack your plantling:
🌿 Leave it in the sphagnum moss for up to a month. This gives your plant time to adjust and settle in after its journey.
After that, you’ll need to replant into a proper soil mix:
-
Ask your local garden centre for a young plant or seedling soil mix, or
-
Grab a bag of our QPS Plantling Raising Mix from our store (crafted by our team just for this stage of growth!).
🧠 A Quick Word on Growing Media
There’s no one “right” or “wrong” way when it comes to growing media—and we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all. We often change things up depending on the season, climate, and specific plant needs.
So if you're wondering why some of your QPS plantlings arrive in sphagnum moss, and others come in our in-house plantling raising mix—that’s why!
We tailor what we use based on what gives each plant the best possible start in your climate zone and the current weather conditions.
❄️ Winter Is a Critical Time
Even though your plantling is tough under the surface, it’s still young and adjusting, especially in colder months. A little extra TLC goes a long way right now.
🌞 QPS Plantling Care Cheat Sheet
🌿 Care Area | 🔍 What to Do |
---|---|

💧 Humidity | 🌱 75–85% RH Mist occasionally or use a humidity dome if your air is dry (especially indoors). |
☀️ Light | Bright, indirect light. Avoid strong midday sun while it's settling in. |
🪴 Repotting | Wait 7–10 days before disturbing, but you can leave in moss for ~4 weeks. |
💦 Watering | Keep moss moist but not soggy. Let the top layer lightly dry before watering. |

🧪 A Note on Sphagnum Moss 🌾
Your plantling may arrive wrapped in sphagnum moss, a clean, moisture-retentive medium that keeps roots happy during transit. Here’s what to do with it:
-
🌱 Leave it as-is for around 4 weeks. Just keep the moss lightly moist and warm.
-
After that, gently remove the moss by soaking or teasing it away.
-
🧺 Plant into a well-draining soil mix suited to your plant’s next stage of growth.
