Sugar Snap Pea Seedlings

Sugar Snap Peas are a favourite cool-season vegetable, producing crisp, juicy pods that are eaten whole. Unlike shelling peas, both the pod and the sweet peas inside are enjoyed, making them perfect for fresh snacking, salads and stir-fries.

Plants are vigorous climbers that typically grow 1.2–1.8 metres tall and perform best when supported by a trellis, fence or pea netting. They produce an abundance of thick, crunchy pods with exceptional sweetness when harvested young and tender.

Pods are typically 7–10 cm long and are best picked while plump, bright green and crisp for the sweetest flavour and longest production.

🌱 Growing Journey: Seedling to Harvest

Plant seedlings in a sunny position during the cooler months. Sugar Snap Peas thrive in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Water regularly, particularly during flowering and pod development, and apply mulch to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Plants quickly produce white flowers followed by crisp, edible pods. Harvest regularly while the pods are young, full and tender to encourage continued flowering and heavy cropping.

✓ Success Checklist

  • Plant in full sun during autumn, winter and spring.
  • Improve soil with compost before planting.
  • Keep soil consistently moist.
  • Provide a sturdy trellis or pea netting before plants begin climbing.
  • Harvest pods regularly while they are crisp and tender.
  • Succession plant every 3–4 weeks for a continuous harvest.

🫛 Pods, Flavour & Kitchen Uses

Sugar Snap Peas produce thick, crunchy pods with a delicious sweet flavour. Both the pod and the peas inside are edible, making them one of the easiest peas to enjoy fresh from the garden.

Perfect for:

  • Fresh snacking
  • Salads
  • Stir-fries
  • Steaming
  • Lunchboxes
  • Vegetable platters
  • Lightly sautéing

🌿 Plant Habit & Melbourne Growing Tips

Sugar Snap Peas grow exceptionally well throughout Melbourne's cooler months, from autumn through spring. They tolerate light frosts and produce their sweetest pods during cool weather.

As vigorous climbers, they perform best when grown on a trellis, fence or pea netting. Vertical growing improves airflow, keeps pods clean and makes harvesting much easier.

🐛 Pest & Care Notes

Keep an eye out for aphids, slugs and snails, particularly while plants are establishing. Good airflow and consistent watering help minimise fungal diseases. Remove spent plants after harvest and rotate crops each season for healthier soil.

As legumes, Sugar Snap Peas naturally fix nitrogen in the soil, benefiting future vegetable crops.

QPS Grower's Tip

Pick Sugar Snap Peas every 2–3 days once pods begin filling. The more often you harvest, the more flowers and pods the plants will produce. For an extended harvest, plant a new batch every 3–4 weeks throughout the cool growing season.
