Red Amaranth, often known by its standout cultivar Red Garnet, is a vibrant and nutrient-dense plant used in both microgreen and mature cropping. With deep magenta stems and leaves, it adds dramatic colour and subtle earthy flavour to culinary creations, while also serving as a striking ornamental if grown to flower.

Whether you're growing for fine dining garnishes or letting the plant reach full size for its flowering beauty and seed head, Red Amaranth delivers versatility and visual impact.

🌿 Characteristics:

Red Amaranth microgreens feature soft, feather-like leaves and vivid red colouring. Their flavour is mild, earthy, and slightly nutty, with a delicate texture. Grown under bright lighting, the colour becomes even more intense.

🍽️ Culinary Uses:

Red Amaranth is a staple in gourmet kitchens. It’s used in:
Salads & Sandwiches – Vibrant colour and gentle crunch.
Fine Garnishes – Adds flair to plated meals and drinks.
Smoothies & Juices – Mild taste, high nutrition.
Stir-Fries & Bowls – Can be lightly cooked or tossed in fresh.
World Cuisine – Loved in Indian, Caribbean, and Southeast Asian dishes.

🌱 Growth Options:

✔️ Microgreen Harvest:
Harvest when 5–10 cm tall, about 8–12 days after sowing. Ideal for single-cut microgreen production.
✔️ Grow to Flower:
Leave to mature into a tall, bushy plant with stunning red flowers. Full-grown Red Amaranth can reach 1–1.5 metres, producing edible foliage, ornamental blooms, and even nutritious seeds.

📏 Plant Spacing:

  • For microgreens: sow thickly on trays or shallow containers.

  • For mature plants: space 20–30 cm apart in beds or pots.

🔁 Multi-Cut or Single-Cut?

Red Amaranth is a single-cut crop in microgreen production. It does not regrow after cutting. For continuous harvests, sow weekly successions.

🫧 Superfood Status:

A small plant with massive benefits. Red Amaranth is rich in:
✔️ Vitamins A, C, and K
✔️ Iron, calcium, potassium
✔️ Antioxidants (betalains)
✔️ Plant-based protein and fibre
✔️ Supports digestion, immunity, and skin health

🌸 Grow to Flower Bonus:

When allowed to flower, Red Amaranth produces tall red plumes that are both edible and highly ornamental. It’s ideal for cutting gardens, seed saving, and decorative borders. The seeds can also be harvested and used like ancient grains.

🌻 Companion Planting (Mature Growth):

🦟 Helps deter pests with pigmentation and scent
🐝 Attracts beneficial pollinators
🌾 Aerates soil with its deep roots, especially in crop rotation systems
